I want you to get the care you deserve.
About Me
Hi! I’m Tara, owner and Physical Therapist at Performers Edge Wellness. I knew from a young age (about my junior year of high school to be exact) that I wanted to be a Physical Therapist. Ever since I graduated and became licensed to practice 20 years ago I have loved being able to help people reduce pain, heal, meet their goals and get back to doing the things they love.
Rehabilitation is only half of my job. If we can correct faulty movement patterns BEFORE they accumulate and cause an injury, we can help KEEP people doing the things they love and avoid having to STOP activity once its too late and an injury has already occurred.
My goals as a Physical Therapist are multifaceted:
Help to facilitate healing in those who need healing.
Provide tools to my patients that empower them to manage their own bodies beyond their injury, decreasing dependence on healthcare providers.
Educate people on the characteristics of their unique anatomy and how they may need to modify activities to maintain wellness.
Address the whole human, not just a diagnosis.
Provide services aimed at preventing injury and improving performance
My transition to dance medicine
Several years ago I had an interaction with an injured dancer which caused me to question how much healthcare providers really understood artistic athletes. After doing some research I found that dancers and other performing athletes can struggle with recurrent and overuse injuries over the course of their performance career, some of which can be prevented with a more nuanced approach. In short, their care can’t be addressed the same as other athletes; they need a specialized approach for their specialized skill set. I also realized that for most athletes there are an abundance of options for preventative wellness and performance enhancement, but none (at least locally) for performers.
As a dance mom who spends a lot of time around competitive dancers I’ve learned that dance is much more than “just dance” to these athletes. It is their passion, their identity and in most cases a large piece of their social structure. Dance friends quickly become family. The same can be said for other performing athletes.
I knew right away that I wanted to fill this void in our local community. As a Physical Therapist with 20 years of experience in outpatient orthopedic practice I have the skills to provide high quality care and services to the performing athletes in the area, and wish to dedicate the rest of my career to being here as a resource for the dance, cheer and gymnastics community.
I have been working with dancers in the clinic for the past several years and find so much joy in watching them achieve their goals and return to their passion. My goal as a provider of rehab and wellness services for artistic athletes is to teach them at an early age about their bodies, give them the tools they need to succeed and help them maximize their potential so they can perform at their best for years to come. I believe that a performers career should be limited only by their passion, not the breakdown of their body.
Specialized care for artistic athletes
Since 2019 I have taken well over 200 hours of continuing education in the dance medicine space through the Harkness Center for Dance Injuries, Dance Medicine Education Initiative, Lisa Howell/The Ballet Blog, The Pointe Shop , attendance at conferences and through many other organizations.
I am certified in PBT (Progressing Ballet Technique) and am a member of IADMS (International Association for Dance Medicine & Science) and the Performing Arts Special Interest Group in the APTA. I am currently the Northern New Jersey team leader for The Bridge Dance Project and look forward to organizing a great fundraising event for them in 2024. I am a dedicated lifelong learner and continue to seek out opportunities to add new tools to my skillset. I am currently working on my pelvic health certification as well as several smaller skillsets that can be used within my practice.
As a physical therapist, I specialize in delivering one-on-one care to my patients. I firmly believe that each individual deserves a personalized and tailored approach to their treatment. By focusing on one patient at a time, I ensure that they receive the highest quality care and have a positive and customized rehabilitation experience. This commitment to individualized care allows me to address the unique needs and goals of each patient, ultimately enhancing their overall well-being and recovery journey. I guide each athlete through careful evaluation, individualized exercise prescription, manual therapy techniques and education to reach their highest potential while making sure to address the whole individual.
